Harvard Athletics Department Pilots Student Marketing Program

velocityHUB was proud to partner with Harvard Athletics to help develop this CMO initiative.

As athletes return to the courts and fields, some will be stepping into a new role—“chief marketing officer”—as part of a new initiative within the Athletics Department aimed at boosting game attendance and team awareness.

As “CMOs” for their teams, student athletes will work with Athletics marketing and communications staff to promote important games and publicize team events and games in the Houses. The new program seeks to increase communication and support between the College’s 42 varsity teams and Athletics marketing department, according to Associate Director of Athletics Susan Byrne.

The head coaches from each team have recommended student athletes to serve as the chief marketing officers for their teams for this year. The position is not paid.

“We hope that they can serve as a liaison to the marketing department,” Byrne said. “We’ll be here as a resource for them, and then they really will act as their team’s brand ambassador.”

Student CMOs will also be involved in coordinating the student rewards program, an Athletics initiative that using the Harvard CrimZone Rewards mobile app to promote certain games by giving away Harvard merchandise or advertising free food.

Students involved in the program will attend three meetings with the marketing and communications staff throughout the year in addition to working with them on specific team projects. Athletics administrators stress that the new responsibilities will be manageable with student’s academic and athletic schedules.

“It’s more than just Tweeting a picture from practice, and it’s supposed to be,” said…

Victory Academy & Brine Northstar Invitational Partner To Build Leadership Skills For Top Athletes

(NASHUA, NH) – On July 26th, Victory Academy launched a partnership with the highly regarded BRINE Northstar Invitational (http://www.northstar-lacrosse.com/invitational), one of the nation’s premier lacrosse recruiting and development experiences. The event took place at the Northwood School in historic Lake Placid, NY. The Northstar Invitational combines concentrated talent, carefully engineered on-field sessions, college recruiting exposure, and high quality lacrosse competition. Attendees are offered nearly as much experience off the field, with extensive focus on sports performance, leadership, inspiration, mental fitness, recruiting perspective, and a holistic approach to supporting student-athletes in the endeavor to be their best.

This year, the Victory Academy made an impact on the event, by adding a formal leadership-training component for the 165 selected student-athletes. In the Northstar Victory Academy, student-athletes were challenged to build a foundation for leadership. The program offered captivating lessons and thoughtful exercises around the Victory Academy’s 9 ACTIONS to BECOMING a LEADER – 9 identified leadership traits of business, athletic, and community leaders. Student-athletes worked with, and learned from, Victory Academy Executive Director, Kristen Kjellman Marshall. Marshall incorporated tangible stories and examples from her experience as a working professional and as a collegiate student-athlete. With this leadership foundation, athletes were given tools and strategies to maximize their potential and become an influencer in their community. The greater vision for the program is that the students will return to their schools, communities, and teams, share these messages and make those around them better.

“We were very pleased to include Kristen and Victory Academy in the BRINE Northstar Invitational experience,” explained Northstar Co-Founder Ashley Gersuk Murphy. “As we anticipated, Kristen’s presentation was very well-received, and contributed to the overall experience of our athletes, just as we had hoped. In addition to the valuable programming, Kristen’s lacrosse-specific caché really resonated with our student-athletes, all of whom aim for success at the next level of the game, and in life. We seek and develop cutting edge resources to offer Northstar athletes as valuable and unique an experience as possible, and we aim to contribute to their development as leaders, on and off the field. Victory is a great partner in this effort, as our messages are very well-aligned.”

On the field, the 2016 Northstar competition was robust as ever, and the reference point is strong; nearly 200 past Northstar athletes have committed to Division I programs, and many of them are currently making a loud impact in the NCAA. In 2016, the Invitational gathered 165 of the nation’s top student-athletes, spanning graduation years 2018 – 2020, and hailed from 23 US States and British Columbia.

Northstar is focused on the developmental opportunity presented by concentrated talent and streamlined information from individuals who have been there, and who know the process,” said Murphy. “By partnering with Victory Academy, we help empower the Northstar student-athletes to leave Lake Placid as more informed, motivated, and confident leaders, with a sense of where they fall in the national landscape, and how best to achieve their goals.”

Kristen Kjellman Marshall, Associate Partner at Velocity Performance and Executive Director of the Victory Academy, is thrilled about the partnership and the positive reaction to the program. “Our vision at the Victory Academy is to build young leaders. We recognize that a leadership void is being created, and we must help fuel a new generation of leaders. I was honored to share my athletic and professional experiences with the student-athletes and help propel them towards their own success,” said Marshall.

LEADERSHIP TIP: 10 Keys to Effective Email Communication – Part 2

We live in a fast-paced society and every employer expects high productivity. One major contributor to efficient productivity is effective email communication. As a professional, you are expected to follow proper email etiquette and you are always a reflection of your writing. Effective written communication is essential in any position and often a major factor towards achieving professional success. Having email standards and following proper guidelines is important to maintaining a healthy professional reputation.

Here are 10 tips to guide you towards EXCELLENCE in EMAIL COMMUNICATION:

  1. KEEP IN MIND THAT IT’S EASY TO FORWARD
  • Leave out any personal information that you would not want shared.
  • Keep it professional.
  1. BE CLEAR WITH THE ACTIONS YOU EXPECT
  • If you are looking for engagement or action, you must be clear with your expectations.
  • Request a specific type of response.
  1. DON’T USE EMOTICONS – UNLESS YOUR SENDER USES THEM FIRST
  • These can be seen as unprofessional.
  • However – If your sender uses them first, then feel free to use them in response. It can help the other person feel like they can relate to you.
  1. ALWAYS HAVE A SUBJECT LINE AND MAKE IT RELEVANT
  • Emails without subject lines seem incomplete and unprofessional.
  • Use a simple, neutral subject that fits the key point you’re alluding to in your email.
  • Do not write the first sentence of your email in the subject line.
  1. BE NICE BEFORE YOU ASK
  • Don’t go right into what you want before you lighten the message – especially if it’s to someone you don’t know well.
  • You can be direct AND be polite.
  1. FOR FORMAL MESSAGES, BE FORMAL
  • When you are writing to a potential employer or someone you may not know well, treat it like a letter.
  • Address the person with “Dear ________,” and close with “Best Regards,” “Sincerely,” or another courteous closing.
  1. GET THE NAME RIGHT
  • It’s tough to start on the right foot when you get the recipients name wrong!
  • Do your research and double-check the spelling.
  1. STAY AWAY FROM FLUFF
  • If you want others to read your email, don’t add too much extra language.
  • Be nice, but to the point.
  1. BE CAREFUL WITH REPLY-ALL & BCC
  • When responding to an email, decide whether you need to respond to only the sender or to all.
  • If you are “Replying-All” make sure to keep it concise, relevant and actionable.
  • BCC can hurt your brand. When someone receives a BCC they may wonder how often the sender does it and view it as slightly underhanded.
  1. WHEN IN DOUBT, CALL
  • If you are not sure how someone will “react” to your email, don’t leave it up to the email – call them.
  • Don’t leave the issue up for interpretation.

Take action now and set individual email standards for effective correspondence. Follow these 10 guidelines to elevate your EMAIL COMMUNICATON EXCELLENCE and maintain a strong professional profile.

Leadership Tip: 10 Keys to Effective Email Communication – Part 1

In today’s fast-paced business world, effective email communication is critical. As a professional, you are expected to follow proper email etiquette and you are always a reflection of your writing. Effective written communication is essential in any position and often a major factor towards achieving professional success. It’s important to note that careers are not MADE by a single email. However, MANY careers have been hurt and damaged by a single email. So having email standards and following proper guidelines is important to maintaining a healthy professional reputation.

Here are 10 tips to guide you towards EXCELLENCE in EMAIL COMMUNICATION:

  1. RESPECT YOUR RECIPIENT
  • Your recipients are humans, not machines
  • Recipients are people just like you. They have feelings and should be treated with respect.
  1. HAVE A PURPOSE
  • The purpose of your email should be to inform, to educate, to answer, to facilitate, to cause action, to share, to connect, and/or to ask.
  • If it does not serve a purpose, then don’t send it.
  1. TYPE ONLY WHAT YOU WOULD SAY IN PERSON
  • Email is a no bully zone – Do not show off your “email muscles.”
  • If you wouldn’t say it while eating a meal with someone sitting across from you, then don’t write it.
  • Many people get courageous when they sit in a quiet room behind the keyboard. Don’t fall victim to this. Be the same person on email as you are in person.
  1. KEEP IT LIGHT
  • Email is susceptible to different interpretations by different people. A sender’s intention can often be perceived very differently by a recipient.
  • Usually the recipient gets more caught up with the tone, than the actual purpose of the email.
  1. SHORT & SWEET – NO RAMBLERS
  • The world is a busy place. Most people already have full schedules and are overloaded with information. So when you send an email, cut to the chase.
  • If you have a purpose – state it – and end it.
  1. TURN ON AUTO SPELL-CHECK
  • Misspelling words and using bad grammar or punctuation reflects negatively on you.
  • Lapses in grammar or punctuation can be forgiven – But misspelled words are just too easy to correct.
  1. DON’T REPLY IN ANGER
  • Email responses sent in anger almost never serve their purpose or your long-term interests.
  • With one quick click of a button, they can tarnish a relationship
  • Wait a day or until you have calmed down and been able to reflect on the issue. You’ll understand the wisdom of restraint.
  1. READ THE EMAIL BEFORE SENDING
  • Often times when you are typing, you have other things on your mind. So when ready to send, take a moment to carefully reread your email.
  • If it is critical, delivers negative news, or is very important, consider printing it out to review.
  1. RESPOND RESPONSIVELY
  • When you receive emails requiring your input – action, decision or opinion – make a commitment to be responsive.
  • Email was a tool created to facilitate communications, not slow it down.
  1. CREATE AN EMAIL SIGNATURE
  • Many people, especially in the professional world, will use this as their default resource to contact you.
  • Send a test email with your signature to a friend outside of your office to make sure that graphics or logos show up as intended.

Take action now and set individual email standards. Follow these 10 guidelines to elevate your EMAIL COMMUNICATON EXCELLENCE and maintain a strong professional profile.

LEADERSHIP TIP – 3 Ways To Become a Persuasive Writer

As a professional, you are a reflection of your writing. The ability to write fluidly, persuasively and get your message heard is a valuable trait to employers. Effective written communication is essential in any position and often a major factor towards achieving professional success. In order to improve your persuasive writing skills, consider assessing and elevating these fundamental parts of your writing: ORGANIZATION, SIMPLICITY and VOICE. This process should guide you towards your ambition to win with words!

The road to PERSUASIVE WRITING EXCELLENCE is rooted in 3 key elements:

  1. ORGANIZATION
  • The very first step is to thoughtfully PLAN your writing. Ask yourself these important questions:
    • What is your PURPOSE?
    • Who are your READERS?
    • What are their INTERESTS?
    • How much do they KNOW already?
    • What RESULT are you seeking?
    • What ACTIONS do you want your readers to take?
  • Start with the most important information first, followed by simple and brief supporting statements.
  • Develop a rhythm, make it easy to comprehend and recognize unnecessary, receptive & abbreviated words
  • Keep paragraphs short and use one sentence paragraphs to HIGHLIGHT A POINT
  • Look for opportunities to divide paragraphs unto LIST or BULLET POINTS – Makes it easy for your reader to comprehend
  • Wrap up your writing as quick as possible. If you are looking to PERSUADE, then end strongly with APPEAL.
    • i.e., A call to action or a question
  1. SIMPLICITY
  • Use Everyday, plain English words.
    • If you wouldn’t say it, don’t write it.
    • Communicate to express your thoughts, not to impress your reader
    • Write like a professional, not like your academic papers
  • Use an appropriate tone & avoid sounding stuffy and negative
  • Keep your writing PERSONAL and SPECIFIC
  • Focus on the needs of the reader
    • When you write for no one in particular, no one in particular reads your writing – nor do they act
  • Engage in a simple conversation – do not attempt to write a novel
  1. VOICE
  • Connect actively by writing in an ACTIVE voice rather than a PASSIVE voice
    • Passive writing is wordy and confuses the reader
    • Passive writing does not logically explain the WHO in relation to the WHAT
  • Assess your sentence structure to make sure it aligns with the tone

Don’t wait; Take action now and unleash your potential. Follow these 3 steps to elevate your PERSUASIVE WRITING skills and boost your professional profile.

6 Compelling Results of College Leadership Training

Leaders are not born. Leaders are made. Many students just need direction and formal training to help them develop their vision, build a plan, and ultimately maximize their potential. With leadership training, students learn the power of influence and are able to motivate and impact other classmates, teammates, and communities. Here are 6 compelling results of college leadership training:

1. Develop Self-Leaders

Becoming a leader starts with a foundation. Students need to be able to understand themselves as leaders before they can lead teams and impact others. Setting a foundation helps students establish their leadership style, identify their vision, and create a road map for the future. Individual leadership training encourages students to be the best version of themselves, which includes making good decisions, being confident, and thinking critically.

2. Drive Competitiveness

Leadership training influences students to evaluate and analyze their current levels of passion, hard work, and commitment. Though internal reflection and team collaboration, it motivates them to raise these levels in the classroom, on the field, or in student activity groups. Establishing goals, setting a plan, embracing teammates and celebrating success along the way, will also help build confidence, and ultimately drive competitiveness.

3. Develop Synergy & Consistency

There are numerous teams, groups and communities on a school campus. Leadership training can help build synergy within a department or even across an entire school, by spreading shared visions, values, and expectations. When students feel like they are truly a part of a team or a community, they are more likely to hold themselves accountable and live their lives according to the values of the greater group.

4. Build Winning Teams

Through leadership training, students learn how to be a good teammate and how to be a leader within their team. They learn that even though only a few students can be chosen as a captain or as the identified leader of a group, they can still be a valuable asset, inspire others and bring their own leadership style to team. For captains or selected team leaders specifically, formal training helps them identify a vision and then develop and support a team that is capable of embracing and delivering that vision.

5. Learn Strategies to Overcome Hurdles

Training provides examples of real-life issues and challenges that student-athletes will face. Understanding what those challenges might look like and how to avoid traps and pitfalls is critical to one’s leadership profile. Training helps students be gracious in defeat, develop a plan to minimize mistakes as a leader, and also learn to overcome those mistakes once they are made.

6. Build Professionals

This country is facing a leadership void. Every day 10,000 baby boomers retire, taking 350,000 years of experience out of the workforce. We need to fill this void and provide college students with the tools and strategies they need to seek and embrace leadership positions after college. Leadership training gives college students a professional edge through networking strategies, relationship building tactics, interview tips, communication excellence, and an understanding of brand management.

College leadership training makes a difference for students, teams, schools and communities. Join the movement on the ROAD TO VICTORY.

Inspiring NH Youth To Set A Foundation For Leadership

(NASHUA, NH) – This past Tuesday morning, over 50 sixth grade students from St. Christopher and Infant Jesus participated in a Victory Academy leadership program via the annual Project Safeguard Day. The young students were challenged by Velocity Performance to build a foundation for leadership. This highly interactive program was specifically designed to inspire youth students, by breaking leadership down into 9 foundational elements and delivering the program in a fun and energetic environment.

Cindy Clarke, Principal at St. Christopher School, expressed her enthusiasm for the program. “The Victory Academy program focused on the belief that each member of our school community is unique and can be a leader in their own way. Our sixth graders gained exposure to age-appropriate leadership concepts and practices.  Through experiential learning strategies, group assignments, and hands-on activities, students experienced the application of leadership skills, building confidence in their abilities and enhancing their capacity to serve in leadership roles. This program will have a huge impact on our students and provided them good leadership strategies to use as they transition to junior high school.”

The goal of the Victory Academy is clear—to propel the emerging generation to their maximum potential and make those around them better. The program provided captivating lessons and thoughtful exercises about the Victory Academy’s 9 ATTRIBUTES of WINNERS—9 identified leadership traits of business, athletic and community leaders.

“Our vision at the Victory Academy is to build young leaders. We recognize that a leadership void is being created, and we must help fuel a new generation of leaders. Victory Academy Inspires Young Student-Athletes Through Lessons in Lacrosse & Leadership

(NASHUA, NH) – Over the past 3 weeks, the Victory Academy has worked with 10 girls lacrosse programs and over 500 student-athletes from southern New Hampshire, to inspire leadership on and off the lacrosse field. The young students were motivated to build individual leadership plans and were challenged to increase their level of commitment in school and lacrosse. The unique program, ‘Becoming Your Best Athlete,’ focuses on 8 key actions to consider and apply to daily commitments as students, athletes, teammates and active community members.

Kerry D’Ambroise, coach of the reigning Division I State Champions, Bishop Guertin High School, praised the program. “Kristen was organized, motivating, and a true role model for my girls. With many Division I committed players on my team, she was able to push them to the next level. Her insight on college lacrosse and her drive to become a better player, teammate and leader, inspired them all. She encouraged the players to set goals and never underestimate their potential. All of the girls discussed how they wanted to achieve such a high level of excellence like her! I would highly encourage the Lax and Lead program at any age and skill level. The program showed my team that good leadership skills are key to becoming not only your best athlete, but your best person as well.”

The program is designed to assist and inspire students to build their own leadership foundation and develop individual plans for commitment. The sessions are filled with thought-provoking content, real life examples from Victory Academy Director, Kristen Kjellman Marshall, and many lacrosse specific exercises. The engagement has been phenomenal, and the energy, electric! Programs who have already participated include:

YOUTH

  • Derry Astros Youth Lacrosse
  • Hollis Youth Lacrosse
  • Hopkinton Youth Lacrosse
  • Nashua Blast Youth Lacrosse
  • Pelham Outlaws Youth Lacrosse

HIGH SCHOOL

  • Hollis High School
  • Londonderry High School
  • Nashua North High School
  • Nashua South High School

Ciki McIntyre, Head Coach of Nashua South High School and Coach of the Nashua Blast Youth Program, was enthusiastic about the impact of the program. “What an amazing opportunity for our athletes to have Kristen come speak about leadership and strategies to becoming your best athlete. The girls were equally impressed with the lacrosse skills session, as well as the conversations about leadership and commitment. It is our hope as coaches that our athletes will use these lessons and take the lead in making hard work and tenacity a daily habit. The program reinforced that these steps to becoming your best athlete will translate into successful leadership roles and confidence on the field, in the classroom and in the work place. We were extremely lucky to have Kristen spend the afternoon with our team!”

“The Victory Academy was established because of a shared vision to make a positive impact on the world through leadership, service, teamwork and inspiration,” said Kristen Kjellman Marshall, Executive Director of The Victory Academy at Velocity Performance. “Through the Lax & Lead program, our goal is to inspire young student-athletes to maximize their potential, and strive for greatness.
